This beginner-friendly Learn to Knit class is designed for those who have never knitted before, as well as anyone who wants a refresher after time away from the needles. You’ll learn the foundational skills of knitting while starting a cozy scarf project you can continue working on at home.
In this class, you will learn:
• casting on
• knitting
• purling
• casting off
• weaving in ends
• finishing your project
You’ll be getting started on an Easy Mistake Stitch Scarf. Made using simple knits and purls, the mistake rib stitch is an excellent beginner stitch. It features a one-row repeat that’s easy to remember and perfect for relaxed, enjoyable knitting. The finished fabric is lofty, soft, and squishy, with a textured look that appears more complex than it actually is.
This class meets on two different days, with time in between sessions to practice what you’ve learned and build confidence before moving forward.
No previous knitting experience is required.
Two skeins of Snuggle, an alpaca blend yarn, are needed for the scarf and are included in the fee for the class. All you have to do is choose the color you'd like to use! Click the link to see larger yarn color images, then select the color of your choice when checking out. Keep in mind that stitches are easier to see with lighter colored yarns.
You will need to bring US Size 11 – 8.0 mm Knitting Needles. Bamboo or wood needles are great choices for beginners. Knitting stitches don't slide off the needles as easily, and they are very comfortable to work with. You will also need a large eye yarn needle for weaving in ends. Or click Needles option when checking out and they will be provided for you when you arrive at class.
Nice to have, but not necessary for class is the Knitter's Pocket Guide (see last picture). It is a laminated handy reference guide to needles, yarns, and stitching techniques, including helpful hints on joining new yarn, changing colors in the middle of a row, picking up dropped stitches, ripping back, and more! There is an option to purchase this guide, if you wish.
Keep your knitting projects in these Clear Project Bags. At a glance, you can be sure you have what you need when you're ready to knit. Alpaca Stitch Markers, Yarn Spindles, and Yarn Ball Winders are other nice-to-haves.
This class is designed for participants ages 16 and older. Youth ages 12–15 are welcome to attend when registered with an adult companion who is also enrolled in the class.
Class will begin at 1pm and finish about 3pm on two separate days.
