Distinguishable from roving, alpaca top undergoes a combing process, resulting in a smooth and uniform preparation. Its strands are consistent in length and run parallel, enhancing the ease of spinning for a truly enjoyable experience.

Alpaca fiber is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is warmer, softer, not prickly, and is hypoallergenic. Alpaca is also naturally water-resistant.

GENERAL PURPOSE SPINDLE
Included in this kit handcrafted drop spindle by David Shepherd of Shepherd's Woodworking is a well-balanced, 1.25-ounce spindle, perfect for beginners. It easily converts between top and bottom whorl by moving the hook, letting you try both styles of spinning. A notch in the whorl keeps spun yarn in place, and each spindle is test spun for balance. Measuring 10.75" long with a 2.5" whorl, the shaft is Poplar, and the whorl is Baltic Birch—both sourced and made in the USA. A smooth sealer coat enhances durability.

TURKISH SPINDLE
A new option that can be ordered in place of the General Purpose Spindle is a Turkish drop spindle. This unique spindle has a cross-arm design that allows for easy winding as you create center-pull yarn ball. This eliminates the winding off step that you have with a general purpose spindle. Known for its portability and balance, this spindle spins smoothly and is great for both beginners and experienced spinners. The arms can be removed for effortless yarn removal, making it a practical and versatile tool for hand-spinning fiber.
