Why Alpaca Top?

Unlike roving, alpaca top has been combed so the fibers are smooth, uniform and arranged in the same direction. This preparation makes the fiber easier to draft and provides an enjoyable spinning experience—especially for beginners.

Alpaca fiber is wonderfully soft, silky, durable and warm. It contains no lanolin and is often preferred by people who find traditional sheep’s wool uncomfortable. Alpaca fiber is also naturally water-resistant.

General Purpose Spindle

This handcrafted drop spindle by David Shepherd of Shepherd’s Woodworking is well balanced and ideal for beginners.

The spindle converts between top-whorl and bottom-whorl styles simply by moving the hook, allowing you to try both spinning methods. A notch in the whorl helps hold the yarn securely, and every spindle is test-spun for balance.

Turkish Spindle
