Meet Luminous, one of the special Suri alpacas here at Alpaca Meadows. Luminous was 18 years old when this fiber was shorn. As a mature fleece, her fiber is not as fine as that of a younger alpaca, but it still has the beautiful luster, distinctive lock structure, and texture that make Suri alpaca fiber so unique.

Luminous has a particularly sweet story. Although she never had a cria of her own, she once helped nurse an orphaned cria and, over the years, has also allowed other mothers’ crias to nurse from her. Her gentle, nurturing nature has made her a special member of our herd.

Hand dyed with Gaywool Dyes in Lavender, this fiber is a beautiful shade of purple that brings out the natural luster of the Suri locks. The color and texture make it a lovely choice for felting, spinning, doll hair, fiber art, and embellishment.

About Suri Alpaca Fiber

Suri alpacas are known for their distinctive fiber, which grows in long locks that hang parallel to the body rather than growing outward in a fluffy fleece.

Suri fiber is prized for its beautiful luster, smooth hand, drape, and unique lock structure. Locks may be twisted, curled, or more loosely structured, giving fiber artists many creative possibilities.

Because this fiber comes from a mature alpaca, it may be best suited to projects where luster, texture, lock structure, and color are more important than next-to-skin softness.
